On Ruckify it is important that your images stand out and that people get a clear representation of what you are offering. Here is a list of tips to follow when capturing your images with your phone or camera.

Lighting

  • Don’t photography your item in a place with poor lighting or at night. That will result in dark, grimy photos that are overly grainy.
  • Do photography your item in natural light beside a window (if indoors) or in direct light (outdoors). This will help your images stay crystal clear! If you are ever able to invest in things like product lighting or reflectors, there are some low-budget items on Amazon.
  • Avoid placing your item too close to the window so the light isn't blown out.
  • And avoid shooting with the window in the background as your item will appear dark.

Background
  • Select a backdrop/area that will make your item pop! Is your item dark in color? Then find something white/bright to put it against (and vice versa). You can’t go wrong with white/black/grey backgrounds. You can even get some cheap bristol board from the dollar store for small items.
  • Avoid cloth backgrounds unless there are absolutely no wrinkles. That drives people nuts.
  • Make sure the area around your item that is seen in the photograph is void of clutter and looks good.
Composition
  • Photographs are presenting in a square thumbnail on Ruckify, so its best to make sure the important bits of your item can be seen in a square format. Make sure your item is centre stage and that you get shots of all its angles if you can (sides, front, back and above).

Lifestyle
  • Sometimes it's also nice to include an image of your item in action so bribe a friend to do a little modeling for you or encourage past clients to send along any images they took with the item (avoid asking in a creepy way). Having a person with your item in the photograph can help potential renters gage the size and picture themselves with it.

Editing
  • There are some pretty decent editing apps out there that can help take your image to the next level! ColorStory is a personal favourite… and it’s free!
  • Avoid crazy filters and snapchat crap on the pictures. Keep it simple and bright.
  • I always use the following editing features to enhance my photography: I bring up the brightness/exposure and sharpness. If my image looks to yellow, I bring down the “temperature”.

I hope that with these tips in mind, you will up your product photography game which will ultimately increase the chances of your item being picked!

While in the early stages of development, the Ruckify team were thinking about what Ruckify could mean for the economy and environment. Together they decided on furthering their agenda for positive environmental change by starting the 10 Million Trees Project, which has a starting goal of 10,000,000 trees to be planted by Ruckify.

"If many people rented items instead of buying them, it could impact the environment big time." Steve Cody stated at a Ruckify information session. "It means that there will be less manufacturing going on, and also less waste. Everyone who rents "things" instead of buying them will ultimately lower their carbon footprint." Steve stated.

And at a time where the world is infested with trash (There is a trash pile circling a current in the ocean the size of texas), less waste is a saving grace.

Here are three amazing things that can happen when you plant trees:

1) It can help slow down climate change.

"Trees help fight climate change because they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere through the natural process of photosynthesis. They store the carbon and release oxygen as part of their natural life cycle. This is good news for the environment because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that is produced in vast quantities from human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels. Over time the release of CO2 into the atmosphere has led to more heat being trapped within the planet, causing a small but significant rise in global temperatures. This problem has been made worse by large-scale deforestation across the world, particularly in areas such as the Amazon rainforest." - Trees 4 Life Campaign

2) It can help protect all sorts of ecosystems:

Due to the teardown of many forests for human consumption, as well as the onslaught of forest fires we have been hearing about (or witnessing), the homes of millions/billions of animals have been destroyed. By planting trees, we are bringing life back into scorched wastelands and giving these animals a new home they can prosper in.

3) Trees create economic opportunities:

"Fruit harvested from community orchards can be sold, thus providing income. Small business opportunities in green waste management and landscaping arise when cities value mulching and its water-saving qualities. Vocational training for youth interested in green jobs is also a great way to develop economic opportunities from trees." - Tree People

You can support this project by simply signing up for Ruckify (A tree is planted on behalf of everyone who just signs up - which is completely free to do)! And a tree is also planted for every transaction that occurs through the app! Together we can reach this starting  goal in no time!

Let's save the planet!
